How do we make soap?
We make our soap using what is refered to as the hot process. It entails a crock pot, vegitable oils, water, sodium hydroxide, a stick blender, assorted utensils, a very good scale and of course a mold.

The batches start out with 54 ounces of oils by weight. This stays nicely in a 5 quart crock pot. The hot process is used because whenwe are done, there is no sodium hydroxide remaining in the batch and no need to wait for the batch to cure as in the cold process method. We know it is all soap.

Ever think of building a soap mold?

If so, this is the one I build and use today. It fits one batch of soap nicely and easily cuts into 20 bars.

Everything was purchased at the Home Depot.

The wood is poplar, but I've made them from oak and pine also.

Below is a dimensioned drawing of my mold and a cutting diagram showing a way to get the pieces from a 1 x 8 x 48 inch board.

The mold is lined with a clear plastic refuse bag before adding the hot soap. I bought mine at Costco. I tried other methods and materials but came back to what was easiest. Your mileage may vary.
